Meaning & Symbolism

The vase-and-cluster pairing is a standard unit of early nineteenth-century border design, meant to be run along a length of cloth or trimming as a continuous frieze. The shading on the petals is drawn to suggest weave or stitch, so the sheet records texture as well as form. Dated 1805–1815, it reflects the firm's production of repeat borders in the decade around the Empire, when Lyon was the centre of French silk design.
