Fabrique de Saint Ruf, Lyon, France - Design for an Embroidered Horizontal Border of the Fabrique de St. Ruf - 1805–1815 - T-Shirt

This is a horizontal border of repeated rosettes, bead swags and pleated fan pendants, drawn as a design for the silk workshop of Fabrique de Saint Ruf in Lyon between 1805 and 1815.

Visual Elements & Composition

Pale white and silver-lilac forms sit on a warm ochre-brown ground, which fills most of the sheet. Three large rosette medallions, each built from radiating petals around a central flower, are spaced evenly across the width. Strings of beads descend in swags between them, and fan-shaped pleated drapery hangs over small fluted columns. A scalloped band forms the lower edge, with smaller rosettes and pendant leaves closing each end. The layout is strictly symmetrical and reads from left to right as one continuous frieze. A stamp at the upper centre and a small number at the right edge mark the sheet as a working document.

Meaning & Symbolism

A border of this kind was built to frame edges. Repeated rosettes, swags and pendants were the standard order of classical border ornament, used on textiles, hangings and interior surfaces. The beaded festoons and fan-pleated drapery draw on ancient and neoclassical sources, giving a surface an ordered, dignified structure. Within Lyonese silk design of the Empire period, this sheet reflects the taste for symmetrical, architectural borders, in which medallions and swags replaced the looser floral garlands of earlier decades.

Designed for the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A horizontal frieze suits the flat span of a tee's chest, where the eye moves across the full width of the design. The three rosettes sit at the centre and at either side, so the composition stays balanced whenever the shirt is worn. The ochre ground and pale motifs carry the structure of the original sheet onto a single garment, letting the border frame the wearer the way it once framed a silk surface.
