Fabrique de Saint Ruf, Lyon, France - Design for a Woven or Embroidered Horizontal Border of the Fabrique de St. Ruf - ca. 1800 - T-Shirt

This is a long horizontal border design from the Fabrique de Saint-Ruf, a Lyon silk house, drawn around 1800 to repeat along a woven or embroidered cloth.

Visual Elements & Composition

The strip is worked in dark blue on a rust-brown ground, with thin rules running along the top and bottom edges. Within the band, arched garlands of laurel rise and fall, framing a central palmette set above a pair of scrolls and a small rosette. Similar groupings repeat on either side, with volute scrolls, paired leaves and small flower-like motifs. The design is symmetrical about its centre, and the right end is cut across, leaving part of the pattern incomplete.

Meaning & Symbolism

Laurel garlands and volute scrolls were standard elements of classical border ornament around 1800. The laurel arches suggest a wreath or festoon that could be repeated endlessly along a length of textile, while the central palmette marks the axis of each unit. Together these forms express the restraint and order of neoclassical taste. Lyon led European silk weaving at this time, and this sheet dates to the moment its workshops were adopting neoclassical ornament for woven and embroidered textiles.

Reading the Repeat on a Tee

A border is designed to be read as a continuous line, and this one carries its symmetry across the full width of the shirt. Set on a classic crew neck, the band of laurel and scroll sits across the chest where the eye can take in its whole rhythm, the way a textile border once read from across a room. The partial unit at the cut end reminds you that the pattern was always meant to keep going.
