Fabrique de Saint Ruf, Lyon, France - Design for an Embroidered or Woven Border of the Fabrique de St. Ruf - 1805–1815 - T-Shirt

This is a narrow horizontal border of six identical floral units, drawn in white on a warm ochre ground and repeated without a break.

Visual Elements & Composition

Ochre fills most of the strip, with off-white drawing the motifs and a touch of pale grey-blue in the fine lines. Each unit shows a small five-petalled blossom on a slender stem, rising from a pointed, leaf-like cup flanked by a lower pair of curved leaves that spread outward. A continuous scalloped line runs beneath the units, so each motif sits inside its own arch. Spacing is even, and the drawing stays simple, with little shading beyond fine lines on the central cup.

Meaning & Symbolism

The design belongs to the early nineteenth-century practice of building a border from a single repeating unit, one that could run along a hem, a trimming or a furnishing edge without interruption. The compact leafy cups and scalloped edge keep the ornament legible at small scale, which suited borders meant to be woven or embroidered in narrow bands. Its restraint sets it apart from the crowded floral groupings of the eighteenth century. The Fabrique de Saint-Ruf was a silk workshop in Lyon, the principal centre of French silk design in this period, and this sheet, dated 1805–1815, records the simplified, repeat-based borders the house produced around the turn of the century.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A border is built to be read as a line, and this one is at home on a shirt, where a horizontal band reads cleanly across the chest or along the hem. The six units repeat at even intervals, so the eye follows the row from one end to the other rather than settling on a single motif. The design's economy suits an everyday tee: the blossoms stay clear and the arches hold their shape, giving the wearer a piece of early Lyon silk design that carries the same orderly rhythm the original sheet was made to show.
