Fortunato Duranti, Italian, 1787 - 1863 - Possible Design for a Title Page - 1820–1850 - T-Shirt

A pencil study for a title page, showing two winged putti making music beneath a bearded head and an inscribed tablet.

Visual Elements & Composition

Pale grey and cream fill most of the sheet, with graphite grey reserved for the pencil lines and shading. A rectangular tablet sits at the centre, carrying the words Il canto above a line that refers to the mondo della virtù. Above it, a bearded head in profile rises into faint cloud forms. Two putti occupy the lower register: one holds a lyre, the other plays a lute, both seated against a ground of light hatching. Construction lines and visible corrections remain in the drawing, so the composition reads as work still in progress.

Meaning & Symbolism

Allegorical title pages of this kind paired musical instruments with an inscription about song and virtue. Music stood for harmony, moral order and the civilising power of art. The bearded head presides over the text as a poetic or classical authority, lending the printed work the weight of ancient wisdom. The putti, in unforced poses, soften that solemnity and invite the words to be sung and read together. Fortunato Duranti drew in the early nineteenth century, when Italian artists still looked to Renaissance and classical models for book illustration.

Worn on the Chest

A composition built around a central tablet suits a chest print, because the inscription sits at the centre of the wearer's torso and the two putti flank it on either side. Seen up close in conversation, the fine pencil hatching and open shading read as hand-drawn detail rather than a flat graphic. The drawing carries its own sense of motion, so it works as well at a distance as it does on a closer look.
