Fortunato Duranti, Italian, 1787 - 1863 - Tasso - 1820-1850 - T-Shirt

A bearded poet in a laurel crown, rendered in dense cross-hatched ink, looks out from an oval medallion while he holds a book against his chest.

Visual Elements & Composition

The design is built from black ink on pale paper. The oval medallion sits inside a dark hatched field and a rectangular border. The sitter appears in three-quarter profile, his eyes turned to the side and his expression serious. The book he holds dominates the lower half of the frame, its pages and cover shaded in deep tone, and one hand rests at the lower left. Lettering runs along the bottom edge beneath the medallion.

Meaning & Symbolism

The laurel wreath is the traditional sign of poetic achievement, and the book held close to the body marks the sitter as a writer whose work is his claim to honour. The name refers to Torquato Tasso (1544-1595), the Italian poet best known for Gerusalemme liberata, an epic that carried the tradition into the religious and courtly world of the Counter-Reformation. Fortunato Duranti (1787-1863), an Italian painter and draughtsman, dated this sheet to 1820-1850, the middle decades of his career. Setting the portrait apart as a framed medallion follows the commemorative conventions of literary portraiture.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A medallion portrait suits the front of a tee because it reads as one contained image, with the sitter's face and book at the centre of the shirt. The dense hatching gives the portrait its presence at a glance and rewards a closer look at the crosshatched detail. Wear it as a tribute to a poet who made his name through the written word.
