Fortunato Duranti, Italian, 1787 - 1863 - The Virgin and the Child - 1820-1850 - T-Shirt

A pen and ink drawing by Italian artist Fortunato Duranti shows the haloed Virgin at prayer in an arched niche, with a reclining infant on a ledge and a unicorn at her shoulder.

Visual Elements & Composition

Paper cream fills most of the sheet, with dark brown ink defining the figures and grey diagonal hatching shading the stone niche into a soft, recessed depth. The Virgin stands centred in the arch, head bowed and hands clasped at her breast, a veil falling over her shoulder and arms. A halo floats above her head. At upper left, the white head of a horned unicorn rises behind her shoulder. In the lower foreground, the naked infant lies along the ledge, his head propped on one hand. The whole image is built from fine parallel strokes, with no lettering or numerals.

Meaning & Symbolism

The unicorn is one of the most established symbols in Marian imagery, associated with purity and with the Incarnation, in which the Mother of God was thought to have conceived without loss of virginity. The clasped hands and lowered gaze express humility and contemplation. The reclining child anticipates the Passion and the vulnerability of the incarnate Christ, drawing the eye from the mother's prayer to the life she bears. Duranti (1787-1863) drew on the clarity and restraint of early nineteenth-century Italian art. This sheet, dated between about 1820 and 1850, is a study of the Virgin's attitude, setting and attributes, and it shows the precision of his line.

Carried on the Chest

The arched niche gives the drawing an upright, centred structure that sits naturally across the front of a tee. The figure reads clearly from a distance, while the fine hatching rewards a closer look as the wearer moves and the light changes across the shirt. The contemplative scene, with its quiet figure and still background, suits a plain, understated garment that lets the drawing carry the design.
