Fortunato Duranti, Italian, 1787 - 1863 - The Virgin and Child Enthroned - 1820–1850 - T-Shirt

A haloed woman sits frontally on a high throne in this graphite sketch by Fortunato Duranti, drawn in the early nineteenth century.

Visual Elements & Composition

Pale paper cream fills most of the sheet, with graphite grey lines and a light grey wash defining the forms. The figure sits at the centre, her gown falling in loose, quick folds across her lap and down to a stepped base. Her hands rest at the middle of the composition, where the eye settles. A rectangular frame encloses two groups of small figures in a shallow interior, and a large round ornament on a pole rises at the upper right. A short inscription runs along the lower plinth.

Meaning & Symbolism

The enthroned figure, flanked by attendants and set beneath a halo, belongs to the long tradition of sacred enthronement, in which the Virgin is shown in majesty as Queen of Heaven. Duranti places her at the centre of a formal hierarchy, with the background figures forming a court around her. The round ornament and architectural setting lift the scene from the domestic to the solemn, stressing the authority and holiness of the subject.

Duranti (1787–1863) worked within the neoclassical currents of his time. This sheet, dated about 1820 to 1850, is a compositional study in which he settles the throne, figures and frame before a finished design, and its economy of line shows his skill as a draughtsman.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A tee is worn close to the body and seen from every side, so the sketch's economy of line reads differently here than it would framed on a wall. The throne's stepped base and the figure's central placement sit across the chest, and the drawing holds its shape as the wearer moves through the day.
