Fortunato Duranti, Italian, 1787 - 1863 - The Virgin with the Child - 1820–1850 - T-Shirt

A graphite pencil study by Italian draughtsman Fortunato Duranti shows the haloed Virgin seated on a rounded cushion, with the Christ Child standing on her lap and a second child leaning in from the right.

Visual Elements & Composition

Pale paper cream fills most of the sheet, and the figures are built from soft graphite grey and fainter shading that deepens around the base. The Virgin's veiled head, faintly encircled by a halo, turns slightly to one side. Her drapery falls in layered, loose folds, and the standing child's bare leg presses against her arm as she steadies him with one hand. The older-looking child at the right rests his arm across her shoulder and looks straight out at the viewer.

Meaning & Symbolism

The grouping follows the Renaissance Madonna and Child tradition, where a companion child signals the Passion and the work of redemption to come. The standing child's grip on his mother and the companion's outward gaze mark a moment of presentation, when the infant Christ is shown to the world. Duranti (1787–1863) worked within the neoclassical currents of the early nineteenth century, and this sheet, dated between about 1820 and 1850, records his method of testing a devotional group in pencil before fixing the poses in a finished picture. The drawing places everyday closeness beside sacred destiny.

Wearing the Study

A figure group this compact reads best across the chest, where the seated Virgin and the standing child sit at a glance and the companion's gaze faces the room. The pencil lines are fine and tonal, so the design rewards a closer look when you are standing still in conversation. Each tee carries the drawing as a single composed image, with the pale ground and graphite modelling kept intact across the front.
