François Flameng, French, born Paris, - Saint Cloud-4 Juin 1906 - 1906 - T-Shirt

This sepia wash drawing shows a formal garden at Saint-Cloud, with clipped trees, a stone balustrade and a curved basin, dated 4 June 1906.

Visual Elements & Composition

Brown ink and watercolour wash build the whole sheet in warm sepia, pale cream, tan and dark umber. A dense mass of clipped trees fills the centre and left, set behind a balustrade and a broad flight of steps where small figures climb and descend. Conical topiary stands along the terrace. In the lower foreground, a curved stone basin sweeps across the sheet, and at the right a seated figure in a long dress rests beside its edge. The lower right corner carries the inscription à mes amis d'Amérique, followed by Saint Cloud, 4 juin 1906 and the artist's signature.

Meaning & Symbolism

The dedication turns the drawing into a personal gift, a view of a familiar place sent to friends abroad. Saint-Cloud was a royal park on the western edge of Paris, and its terraces and clipped trees were a setting for visitors who came to walk, sit and watch. The loose washes favour light and foliage over architectural detail, so the garden reads as leisure and memory rather than a survey. François Flameng (1856 to 1923) was known for portraits of prominent sitters and later for his recording of the First World War. This sheet shows his lighter, observational side, where he moved from formal portraiture to outdoor scenes in a fluent wash manner.

Wearing the Garden

A tee gives the composition a broad, uninterrupted field, so the terrace and steps rise across the chest while the basin curves toward the hem. Seen from a distance, the cream ground and soft brown washes read as a calm scene, and the figures seem to move as you do. It is a quiet piece of Paris history, built for a shirt you will wear often.
