François Schommer, French, born Paris, - Seated Male Figure - 1915 - T-Shirt

A seated young man in a high-collared dark coat sits on a wooden chair, drawn in white chalk and charcoal on grey-blue paper by François Schommer.

Visual Elements & Composition

The vertical sheet gives the figure the full height of the page, from the chair back to the boots, with no background detail to compete with him. Charcoal dominates the coat and trousers, softened by smudged shading. White chalk picks out the face, the white cravat at his collar and the edges of the chair, so the eye moves from the head down through the pose. His body turns slightly left while his face meets the viewer, and one hand rests on his knee. Faint cursive lettering and a signature sit in the lower left corner, below the figure.

Meaning & Symbolism

The sitter's calm, direct gaze and relaxed posture make this a portrait study rather than a narrative scene. His high cravat and fitted coat recall fashions of the early nineteenth century, so the drawing looks back to earlier dress and portraiture even though the catalogue dates it to 1915. Schommer used chalk to study light and form quickly, and the sheet reflects his sustained interest in historical costume and portrait drawing in the early twentieth century.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

On a tee, the figure's face sits at chest height, so the seated man looks straight out at whoever is facing the wearer. The bright chalk highlights on the face and collar land close to the neckline, where the white cravat meets the dark coat. The quiet grey ground and restrained monochrome let the pose and posture carry the design, the way the original sheet does.
