Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Boulders in El Yemen Valley, Palestine (Israel) - February 20, 1868 v4 - T-Shirt

A graphite pencil study of a heavy rock mass tilting down a diagonal slope in the El Yemen valley, with a stepped cliff rising at the right.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is built from ochre paper, grey graphite, and open space. A heavy block of stone sits at the upper centre, its outline drawn in loose, repeated strokes, and shading gathers on its underside and in a dark cleft along its left flank. A lower block sits beneath it along the same diagonal, carrying the eye from upper centre toward the lower left. The stepped cliff edge at the right balances the weight of the stones, while faint curves and short marks scatter across the open paper. The name El Yemen is written near the lower right corner.

Meaning & Symbolism

Church travelled to the eastern Mediterranean in the late 1860s, and this sheet, dated 20 February 1868, records the rock and terrain he encountered there. Studies made directly on paper like this one were kept as source material for his later studio paintings. The contrast between dense shaded forms and quick sketched passages shows the close, field-based observation of stone and slope that anchored his landscapes within the Hudson River School tradition. Here the rock itself is the subject, treated as mass set on sloping ground.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

On a tee, the drawing sits at chest scale and is seen at conversational distance, so the diagonal of falling stone crosses the wearer's body as they move. The cliff at the right anchors one side of the composition, and the open paper around the stones keeps the study light across the shirt. Taken from the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum collection, this is a field sketch from one of Church's journeys, and it reads best on a shirt that lets the quiet, observational line of the original stand on its own.
