Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Boulders in El Yemen Valley, Palestine (Israel) - February 20, 1868 v2 - T-Shirt

This vertical pencil study by Frederic Edwin Church shows tilted boulders resting on a slope beneath a ragged cliff edge.

Visual Elements & Composition

Graphite grey works across peach-toned paper, and the paper makes up most of the sheet. A group of blocky stones sits centre-left. The largest is hatched with short diagonal strokes on its upper face and darkened underneath, and it is propped by a rounded neighbour and a lower slab. A ragged cliff line crosses the top of the page, with the name El Yemen written at upper right. Curved horizontal bands of shading and a few tiny figures run along the foot of the composition.

Meaning & Symbolism

The sheet is concerned with how heavy stone sits on a slope and how it relates to the ground and the cliff above. The vertical format makes the boulders read as stacked or precariously balanced, while the horizontal bands suggest layers of terrain or a shallow valley floor. The small figures set scale against the rock, a device Church used throughout his travel sketches of mountain and desert country.

Church, a principal painter of the Hudson River School, travelled to the eastern Mediterranean in the late 1860s. This sheet, dated 20 February 1868, comes from that journey. Field drawings made in pencil were later used as sources for the larger canvases of his studio.

Carried Close

A field sketch is meant to be read at arm's length, and a tee is worn at the same close range. Across the chest, the boulders keep the scale of the original page, with the cliff line running toward the collar and the tiny figures sitting low near the hem. The composition moves with the body, so the balanced stones stay in view as you go about your day.
