Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Chimborazo from Riobamba, Ecuador - July 1857 v2 - T-Shirt

Frederic Edwin Church's graphite study of Chimborazo, the snow-capped volcano rising above the high plain near Riobamba, Ecuador, is drawn with the patient precision of a traveller recording a landscape in the field.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is built as a wide landscape panorama, with the snow-capped volcanic mountain dominating the upper centre. A smaller peak sits to the right, and the foreground opens into a sketched plain dotted with scattered trees and cacti. A rocky ravine cuts through the lower ground, drawn in fine graphite lines. A light watercolour wash of parchment beige covers most of the sheet, with touches of graphite grey, snow white, rust brown and ochre. The title Chimborazo from Riobamba appears as the only lettering on the sheet.

Meaning & Symbolism

Chimborazo carried enormous scientific and romantic weight in the nineteenth century, studied closely by Alexander von Humboldt. For artists of the era, the peak stood for the sublime power of nature and the unmapped frontiers of the natural world. Church, a leading figure of the Hudson River School, travelled extensively through South America to document its topography. This sketch joins his naturalistic precision to the grand, awe-inspiring vision typical of mid-nineteenth-century American landscape painting.

Designed for the Chest

A landscape panorama like this one reads best when it is seen at a distance, and a tee carries it across the chest in the same way a field sketch is held up for the eye. The pale parchment ground and the open sky above the peak give the composition room to breathe on the shirt, so the mountain stays the focal point as you move through the day.
