Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Cloud Sketch - probably 1873–74 v2 - T-Shirt

This pencil study of clouds and distant shoreline is a working page from the hand of Frederic Edwin Church, with its colour notes written directly onto the sheet.

Visual Elements & Composition

Tan paper fills most of the frame, with graphite grey carrying every line. In the upper right, a dense cluster of hatched cloud masses is shaded with diagonal strokes, and numerals are written over them. Below, a band of ridged, broken forms runs across the sheet, thinning into streaks and soft contours toward the water. A line of open, wavy marks sweeps along the bottom edge. In the upper left, a handwritten key lists numbered colour names, among them "cool greyish blue reflected from sky," "Dark greenish blue," "Lake," and "Dark purple," with notes like "very dark" placed beside the lower forms.

Meaning & Symbolism

The sheet was a colour reference, not a finished view. Each numbered passage of cloud and distant ground points to a named hue, so the tones Church observed outdoors could be matched later in the studio. The note on blue reflected from the sky shows his attention to how light carried colour from one part of a scene into another. Church (1826–1900), an American painter of the Hudson River School and a pupil of Thomas Cole, made many drawings and oil studies of skies and clouds, often annotated like this one. The close study of atmosphere sits behind the large landscapes he is remembered for.

On This Tee

A study like this is meant to be read up close, and a shirt brings it to a close reading at chest height, where the numbered key and the hatched clouds can be seen as they were drawn. The composition is built from layers of tone rather than a single image, so it rewards a second look as the wearer moves. Printed across the front, the sheet keeps its character as a page of notes, with its colour names and handwritten numerals left legible.
