Frederic Edwin Church, American, - El Khasné from the Siq, Petra, Jordan - February 25-27, 1868 v4 - T-Shirt

Frederic Edwin Church's graphite study shows the rock-carved facade of El Khasné, known as the Treasury, rising at the end of the narrow Siq gorge in Petra, Jordan.

Visual Elements & Composition

The design is built around a deep vertical corridor of stone that closes in on either side and opens onto the monument. The classical facade fills the far end of the view, its columns and pediment picked out in fine, controlled line. Shadow dominates the foreground rock, while the lit architecture draws the eye straight through the gap. The work is rendered in graphite on brown paper, so the tonal range moves from soft darks to pale highlights.

Meaning & Symbolism

El Khasné stands for the meeting of human craft and natural rock. Its Hellenistic style, carved directly into rose-red sandstone cliffs, marks a city that nineteenth-century Western audiences knew as a legendary lost city of the ancient world. Church made this record during his travels through the Middle East in the late 1860s, when his sketches helped bring the Levant's remote landscapes and ruins into American and European view. As a central figure of the Hudson River School, he approached such sites with the same scientific observation he applied to wilderness scenes at home and abroad.

Wearing the Study

A drawing of a single threshold suits a tee, where the design sits across the chest and the viewer reads it at close range. The Treasury's pale facade lands at the centre of the shirt, with the dark corridor framing it on every side. Each line of the original pencil-like work reads clearly up close, so the detail of the columns and the depth of the gorge come through as you look at the shirt.
