This is a pencil study of ferns and a leafy flowering stem, drawn by Hudson River School painter Frederic Edwin Church on a sheet of tan paper in October 1865.

Visual Elements & Composition

Warm tan paper fills nearly the whole sheet, with graphite grey lines doing all the work. A large fern frond rises diagonally on the left, its leaflets drawn in quick, repeated strokes. Smaller fronds sit at the centre and lower middle, one arching over a thin stem and another pointing toward the base. On the right, a stem carries broad, serrated leaves and a cluster of small flowers or buds. Short handwritten notes run across the upper edge, and a round collector's stamp sits near the bottom.

Meaning & Symbolism

The sheet is a working record. Each plant is isolated so its structure can be read: how the leaflets branch from the central stalk, how each leaf is outlined, the angle at which it grows. The annotations make it a field notebook, where close observation and written description share the same page. Church made studies like this throughout his career, and pages of accurate foliage such as this fed the botanical precision of his large landscapes. The sheet is held in the Smithsonian's Cooper Hewitt collection.

Wearing the Study

A tee is seen up close and turned as the wearer moves, so the drawing reads best when its fine linework is near the eye. The ferns are sketched as separate, unhurried studies, and on a shirt they keep that quality: each frond stands on its own, with plenty of open space around it, the way Church set them down on the paper.
