Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Tree Sketches, Vermont - October 1865 v1 - T-Shirt

A quiet graphite study of two tree groups in autumn foliage, dated October 1865 and annotated with the artist's own colour notes.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is built from two separate studies. On the left, a broad canopy spreads across the upper field, supported by a firm main trunk and branches. Its foliage is drawn as clustered, scalloped masses, with a darker band of shading in the centre that gives the crown depth. On the right, a looser cluster is formed from short, broken strokes, a few sprigs and a scatter of fine dots. Handwritten notes sit below the drawings, recording "orange," "green," and "gold yellow," and the sheet is inscribed with the date. Grey-green dominates the paper, with graphite grey carrying the linework.

Meaning & Symbolism

The sheet is a record of light and colour at a particular season. The handwritten notes show Church judging the tones of the leaves as he drew, and the October date fixes the study at the moment foliage changes. Made outdoors during his travels, it was a preparatory source rather than a finished picture. Frederic Edwin Church, a leading painter of the Hudson River School, produced many sketches of this kind, which he drew on when composing his larger landscapes.

Where the Study Meets the Tee

Pencil studies like this one reward a close look, and a tee keeps the artwork in view as you move and turn. The left-hand canopy and the right-hand scatter of leaves can sit across the chest and sleeve, so the composition reads as two separate groupings of trees, just as the artist drew them. The handwritten colour notes stay part of the image, pairing the sketch's observation with the everyday act of wearing it.
