Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Figure Sketches, Egypt - January 1868 v2 - T-Shirt

This is a quick graphite study of three separate subjects, a crosshatched object, an indistinct form and a standing figure seen from behind, drawn by Frederic Edwin Church during his 1868 journey through Egypt.

Visual Elements & Composition

Most of the sheet is open, pale tan paper, and the marks cluster in the upper left. At left, a rectangular form is shaded with a crosshatched grid and tilted at an angle, with a hand or edge beside it. At centre, a partly indistinct shape with a curved back sits above a faint base, joined by a short thin line. At right, a figure in a long, loosely shaped wrap and head covering stands with its back to the viewer. The grey graphite lines are the only colour, and an accession number is written in the lower right corner, with a circular stamp near the lower centre.

Meaning & Symbolism

The three drawings isolate single details rather than building a scene. Church, a leading American landscape painter and pupil of Thomas Cole in the Hudson River School, recorded passing sights like these on his travels, and pages of this kind were later used as raw material for finished paintings. The figure seen from behind keeps its anonymity, and the restraint of the sheet reads as an observation noted in the moment and left unfinished.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A tee carries its artwork across the chest, where the eye lands first and then moves across the open space around it. Like the sheet, this design leaves plenty of room between its three small marks, so the composition reads as a handful of separate notes rather than one crowded image. Wearing it puts a traveller's quick study of Egypt on the body, the way the original page held it on paper.
