A sparse graphite sheet from January 1868, in which Frederic Edwin Church records three separate motifs noted in quick outline on a single page.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet sits on a pale cream ground, and the drawing occupies only the upper half, leaving the rest of the paper open. At left, a flat rectangular object is filled with a fine grid of intersecting lines and tilted diagonally. Near the centre, a small animal-like form is drawn in a few strokes, with a thin extension at the front and a rounded body. At right, a robed figure is seen from behind, its head wrapped and its garment shaded with diagonal hatching to suggest folds. The three motifs stay apart from one another, and nothing is developed into a complete scene.

Meaning & Symbolism

Church (1826–1900), a pupil of Thomas Cole, was among the principal painters of the Hudson River School. Catalogue records place this sheet in Egypt during his Near East journey. Sketches of this kind hold the raw material of observation: a figure, an object and an animal set down as reminders of a single day. They could later be recombined in a finished canvas or kept as a memory of place. Notes of this scale form a small but telling part of the travel material from which his later paintings drew their detail.
