Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Four Floating Icebergs, Canada - July 16, 1859 v2 - T-Shirt

This graphite sketch records icebergs drifting off the coast of Newfoundland, drawn by Frederic Edwin Church during his 1859 expedition to the North Atlantic.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is worked in graphite on light brown wove paper, and that warm ground sets the tone for the whole sheet. The icebergs are the clear focus. Their pale, angular masses hold their shapes against the open water, while the shading around them stays loose and quick. The composition is spare: a few floating forms, a sense of distance, and plenty of open paper. Nothing is decorative, and nothing competes with the ice.

Meaning & Symbolism

Church made this sketch as a plein-air study, a direct record of a place and a date in the late nineteenth century. The icebergs stand for the transient and the sublime, shapes that shift as they drift and that carry the indifference of the Arctic environment. The sheet also reflects the Victorian fascination with remote regions then being mapped by explorers, where scientific observation and artistic inquiry met. Church was a central figure of the Hudson River School, and this drawing shows the rigour of his observation that underpinned his larger studio canvases. The work is held in the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum collection.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A tee is seen up close and turned in the wearer's own light, so the sketch's fine graphite lines and soft shading read at conversational distance. The drawing has no fixed edge to frame, and its drifting icebergs sit well on a shirt that moves with the body. Wearing this piece puts a record of one 1859 morning off Newfoundland in everyday view.
