Visual Elements & Composition

The larger mass sits at left, with a flat, pale upper surface, a shadowed underside and a broken, jagged face at its right end. The smaller berg at right is lower and more fragmented, with a dark base and faint modeling. White ice glows against a tan ground while the shadows stay restrained, so the light falls almost entirely on the ice. The composition is sparse and cool, with the waterline cutting straight across the sheet. An inscription in the lower center records the date, July 1859.

Meaning & Symbolism

The sketch records a moment of direct observation of ice at sea. Frederic Edwin Church, a leading member of the Hudson River School, made numerous iceberg studies during his summer 1859 journey to Labrador and Newfoundland. The contrast between bright ice and dark shadow conveys scale and isolation, the vast, remote northern waters that fascinated the artist and his contemporaries. Drawings like this one, made quickly on location, supplied the observed detail for his large finished canvases, the best known being The Icebergs of 1861.
