Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Two Floating Icebergs, Canada - July 16, 1859 v1 - T-Shirt

A pencil study on tan paper, this sheet records two icebergs in profile above a faint horizon, dated July 16, 1859, by Frederic Edwin Church.

Visual Elements & Composition

The larger iceberg sits at left as a tilted, wedge-like mass. Its upper plane is lifted in bright white, while its shaded face moves into warm grey and brown. A smaller detached block rises from its right side, and a flat white patch marks the waterline. At the right edge, a second and more schematic iceberg appears in fine pencil outline with touches of white. The pencil date sits beneath the larger form, the only lettering on the sheet.

Meaning & Symbolism

Icebergs in nineteenth-century landscape painting stood for the sublime, a nature that is vast, remote, and always reshaping itself. Church, a painter associated with the Hudson River School, built his reputation on landscapes drawn from travel and direct observation. His journeys to the far north in the late 1850s produced many sketches of icebergs and polar seas, which fed his large studio paintings of Arctic subjects. This study shows his working method: pencil for contour, white heightening for light on ice, and a date that fixes the observation to a single day of travel.

Across the Chest of This Tee

A study this size is made to be seen at close range, and the ice here reads best as a field of sharp planes and eroded edges. Printed across the front of this tee, the drawing's cool, contemplative palette and its precise linework stay legible as the shapes of the ice move with the body.
