Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Two Floating Icebergs, Canada - July 16, 1859 v3 - T-Shirt

Two icebergs float in profile above a single horizon line, drawn in graphite with white highlights on buff paper and dated July 16, 1859.

Visual Elements & Composition

The larger berg sits at left, its flat, tabular top tapering down to a low waterline. Pale highlights run across that upper surface, while graphite shading models the eroded face below. A pointed spire rises at its right end. The smaller berg at right is lower and more broken, with a notched silhouette and far less modelling. Between them lies open, empty water. The sheet is nearly all paper and pencil, with no figures, no land, and no sky beyond the horizon, so the eye settles on the forms and the space that separates them.

Meaning & Symbolism

Frederic Edwin Church, a painter associated with the Hudson River School, travelled to the Labrador coast and Newfoundland in 1859. Icebergs drifting south from Arctic glaciers were a striking sight in those waters each summer, and their vast scale and slow, unpredictable movement made them emblems of the sublime in nineteenth-century landscape thinking: nature immense and indifferent to human presence. This drawing is a field study rather than a narrative. It records the tabular top, the submerged base, and the relation of two bergs across the water, quickly noted so the forms could be recalled and developed later in the studio.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A tee carries its image at chest height and is seen as the wearer moves, so the composition reads as a single wide scene rather than a detail held close. The horizon line and open water give the design its calm, spacious layout, which suits the front of a shirt. Wear it and the two bergs keep their distance from each other, as they did on the page.
