Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Iceberg near Belle Isle, Canada - July 15, 1859 v2 - T-Shirt

This is a graphite study of a colossal Arctic iceberg drifting through cold water off the coast of Belle Isle, Canada.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is made in graphite on tan wove paper, so the image rests on warm neutral ground with soft grey tones. The iceberg dominates the sheet as a single, isolated mass. Its sculpted planes are built from layered pencil strokes, with the sea reduced to a few quiet marks around its base. Nothing competes with it, and the empty water around it makes its scale feel even larger.

Meaning & Symbolism

Church made this observation during his mid-summer 1859 expedition to the North Atlantic near Labrador. The iceberg stands for the sublime, the untamed power of nature that also carries a sense of fragility, since every glacier is slowly melting away. In the mid-nineteenth century the North was still being charted and romanticized, so the sketch worked as both scientific record and poetic reflection. Church was a leading figure of the Hudson River School, and studies like this one, made directly from observation, fed the large landscape paintings that made his reputation. The original drawing is held in the Smithsonian's Cooper Hewitt collection.

Drawn From the Water Up

A tee carries its image across the chest and moves with the wearer, so the iceberg is seen at changing angles throughout the day. Up close, the layered pencil marks read as fine detail. From a few steps away, the single mass and its open sea settle into a clear silhouette. The composition's emptiness suits a plain front, letting the drawing carry the shirt without any added elements.
