Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Iceberg near Cape Race, Canada - June 21, 1859 v1 - T-Shirt

A single iceberg floats in profile above a faint horizon, rendered in white gouache and pencil on tan paper and dated June 21, 1859.

Visual Elements & Composition

The study is built from very few elements. The plain tan ground fills the whole sheet, and the iceberg, drawn in opaque white gouache, is the only mass on it. Pencil contours outline its edges, and loose, directional strokes build up its faceted planes and shadowed hollows. A higher peak rises just right of centre, with lower shoulders sloping away on either side. A pencil inscription in the upper right corner reads "June 21st/59," the only text in the image.

Meaning & Symbolism

Icebergs drifted south from Arctic waters on the Labrador Current and were met each summer off Newfoundland and near Cape Race, where they threatened shipping. For nineteenth-century viewers, such a form stood for nature's immense, slow scale, for the danger of northern seas, and for the impermanence of things that look solid. Frederic Edwin Church, a leading Hudson River School painter and a pupil of Thomas Cole, travelled to the Labrador and Newfoundland coast in 1859 and made numerous on-site studies of ice. Drawings like this one, dated and made quickly on paper, were source material for his studio work, and the iceberg subject culminated in his large oil composition of 1861.

Drawn From a Single Moment

The dated inscription fixes this iceberg at one observed moment, a particular shape at a particular hour rather than a generic idea of ice. That precision suits a T-shirt, where the image sits flat on the chest and reads as one composed form. The quiet, austere tone of the drawing carries straight onto the shirt, with the white iceberg standing alone against the tan ground.
