Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Iceberg near Cape Race, Canada - June 21, 1859 v4 - T-Shirt

A single pale iceberg rises from a flat horizon on warm buff paper, drawn in graphite and white gouache by Frederic Edwin Church and dated June 21, 1859.

Visual Elements & Composition

The iceberg fills the centre of the sheet in soft white passages set against a warm, light-brown ground. Its mass rises in tiers, with a broad, angled summit on the left and a lower shelf running toward the right. Faint pencil contours show the forms beneath the white, and a thin horizon line anchors the base. The composition is horizontal and restrained, with the lower third left as open paper. A handwritten date, June 21st, 1859, sits in the upper right corner.

Meaning & Symbolism

Church returned to the iceberg repeatedly during his voyages to the North Atlantic coast, where drifting ice was a common sight in early summer. Cape Race, on the southeastern tip of Newfoundland, lay on the route between Europe and North America, and the bergs passing its waters were both a navigational hazard and a source of wonder. Here the ice is reduced to planes of light and shadow, a simple, almost monumental form. The dated inscription fixes the study to a moment of direct observation. Church, a leading Hudson River School painter, used sketches like this as preparation for larger compositions that treated ice as a symbol of the sublime and of nature's immensity.

Made for the Wearer Close to Hand

A drawing this quiet rewards a close look, and a tee puts it at chest height, where the pale berg and its horizon line can be read in the natural flow of the body. The open lower third of the sheet translates into the clean space below the print, letting the single form stand on its own. Its restraint suits everyday wear.
