Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Icebergs near Cape St. John, Canada - July 5, 1859 v1 - T-Shirt

This pencil and white-gouache study shows several icebergs drifting on a calm sea, dated July 5, 1859, and drawn on a warm tan sheet.

Visual Elements & Composition

Two large, low ice masses fill the foreground. Their sunlit faces are modeled in cream and white, with soft brownish shadows pooling beneath them. Smaller bergs sit along the distant waterline near the top of the sheet. Thin pencil strokes mark the water and the faint horizon, and much of the paper is left bare, so the light seems to spread across the whole page. The inscription "July 5th, 1859" appears in the lower center, and a museum collection stamp sits at the lower left.

Meaning & Symbolism

Frederic Edwin Church (1826–1900) was a leading American landscape painter of the Hudson River School and a pupil of Thomas Cole. He traveled north and to the tropics to study ice, sea, and light. Icebergs drifting south from the Arctic fascinated travelers and artists of the period, who read them as emblems of nature's scale, transience, and power. Church shows these bergs as weathered and low rather than dramatic, so the study focuses on color, surface, and light. It was a quick record made on the spot, meant to be worked up into finished compositions later.

Worn Close to the Body

A study made on the spot was drawn to be seen up close, and this print carries that intimacy onto the wearer. The bergs sit across the chest and shift with every movement, so the pale ice and open tan ground read differently from one angle to the next. The quiet, luminous mood of the original travels with the person wearing it.
