Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Icebergs near Cape St. John, Canada - July 5, 1859 v2 - T-Shirt

Frederic Edwin Church's pale study of icebergs, dated July 5, 1859, is a quiet record of ice drifting along the North Atlantic coast.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing sits on warm tan paper, and the icebergs are built from white and cream gouache with fine graphite lines marking the waterline. Three small floes rest on a distant horizon at upper center and left. Two larger masses take over the foreground: a broad, sloping berg at lower left with a pointed rear edge, and a more angular, layered berg at right. A handwritten "July 5th 1859" sits in the lower center, and a circular stamp of the Museum for the Arts of Decoration appears at lower left.

Meaning & Symbolism

Church pursued icebergs on his voyages to the North Atlantic coast, where Arctic currents carried ice past Labrador and Newfoundland each summer. For a landscape painter of the mid-19th century, that ice was both a sublime natural spectacle and an object of scientific curiosity. The careful separation of submerged and exposed ice shows the vast mass hidden below the surface, and the dated inscription ties the study to a single day of observation. Icebergs became a recurring motif in his late 1850s and early 1860s work, leading to the monumental painting The Icebergs (1861).

Read It Close, Wear It Close

Like the sketch itself, this tee puts the design on a surface you look at up close, so the cool palette and the fine line work of the waterline stay legible at arm's length. The pale ice and dated inscription give the front a calm, observational quiet, and the composition reads as a study of light, transparency, and weight rather than a scene with a story to tell.
