Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Interior Courtyard, Italy - October 1868 v2 - T-Shirt

This is a working page from a 19th-century landscape painter's sketchbook, covered in pencil tests and handwritten colour notes for a view of an Italian courtyard.

Visual Elements & Composition

A cream sheet is filled almost edge to edge with graphite. Soft, dense hatching runs in diagonal bands across the middle of the page, crossed in places by quick horizontal scribbles. Fainter, lighter passes sit above them, and a jagged zigzag line cuts along the lower edge. Looping handwritten words, including "orange" and "gran bleu," are set among the bands, so the page reads as a mix of tone and written colour rather than a single image.

Meaning & Symbolism

The bands of shading show how Church judged light, depth and stroke direction through pencil alone, while the written words stand in for the colours he planned to use. Church (1826-1900) trained under Thomas Cole and became known for large, luminous views of nature, many painted from studies made on his travels in Europe. Sheets like this one were the groundwork for those finished canvases, recording the palette before the paint went down.

Made for Close Viewing

Notes like these are meant to be read at close range, where the hatching and handwriting resolve into individual decisions. A tee carries the same kind of detail at chest height, where the pencil marks and script can be seen up close as you move through the day.
