This design is a pen-and-ink study of one church, drawn in Rome in October 1868, set out as three stacked views of its vault, its interior gallery and its exterior.

Visual Elements & Composition

Dark brown ink sits on cream paper, and the lines are firm and controlled. At the top, a ribbed vault curves toward a central boss. The middle view shows a row of columns and round-headed arches beneath a sloping timber ceiling, with the handwritten caption Frescoed hall beside it. The lowest study is the exterior: a tall drum pierced by arched openings, a gabled facade, a round window and a row of doorways. Hatching describes shadow in the arcade and recesses in the walls, and numbered marks sit within the arches.

Meaning & Symbolism

The sheet works as a record rather than a picture. Church, a leading member of the Hudson River School best known for his panoramic landscapes, drew architecture with the same structural care. Each view is labelled and numbered so the building could be recalled or rebuilt in later work. The inscription at upper right names the church and city, fixing the study to Rome in 1868 and to Church's wider record of European travel.
