This is a graphite study of the Mexican highlands near Cuautla, drawn by Frederic Edwin Church in February 1885 during his travels in the region.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is built around a wide horizon. Ranges of mountains fill the upper ground, their ridges and slopes described in fine, controlled graphite lines, while the sky and valley floor open out in soft tonal shading. Nothing in the frame is ornamental. The eye moves from the nearest folds of land to the distant peaks, and the empty expanse between them does much of the work. The drawing is monochrome, a grey range of marks on off-white paper.

Meaning & Symbolism

Church worked as a central figure of the Hudson River School, and his later travels to Mexico produced many detailed studies of this kind. Here he treats the landscape as a record of geological structure and natural history, a place where forces of rock and weather are visible in the terrain itself. For American artists of the late nineteenth century, Mexico offered terrain distinct from the familiar scenery of the United States and Europe. The drawing carries that interest in direct observation and in the scale of untouched land.
