This is a pencil sketch of Popocatépetl rising above the bell tower and domed church of Cuautla, Mexico, drawn by Frederic Edwin Church in February 1885.

Visual Elements & Composition

Meaning & Symbolism

The church dome and bell tower stand for the colonial religious architecture that shaped Mexican towns, while the mountain gave travellers a fixed point in the landscape. Popocatépetl takes its name from the Nahuatl for "smoking mountain," and it was a familiar presence across the region and a frequent subject for visitors. Church (1826–1900) was a leading Hudson River School painter who travelled widely in Latin America and filled sketchbooks with studies of landscape and architecture.
