Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Popocatépetl from Cuautla, Mexico - February 1885 v1 - T-Shirt

This pencil sketch by Frederic Edwin Church shows the volcano Popocatépetl rising above a small colonial church in Cuautla, Mexico, drawn in February 1885.

Visual Elements & Composition

Graphite on cream paper carries the whole scene. A conical volcano fills the middle distance, its summit rising to a point above lower ridges, with foothills spreading out on either side. In the foreground, a bell tower stands at left beside a low church wall, and a domed cupola rises at centre above a plain block of masonry. A small hill sits at lower right. The shading stays restrained, and the upper part of the sheet is left open. Handwritten place names run along the lower margin, including Cuautla.

Meaning & Symbolism

The pairing of a distant volcano with a local church is the heart of the drawing. It places a town within the immense landscape around it. Popocatépetl, the snow-capped peak that dominates the valleys south-east of Mexico City, was one of the great natural landmarks that drew foreign painters to the country in the nineteenth century. Church, a leading painter of the Hudson River School, made several journeys to Mexico and drew its volcanoes repeatedly. Sketches like this one were the groundwork for his large oil landscapes, and the sheet shows his habit of reducing a scene to its essential outlines.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A landscape this wide reads best at a distance, and a chest print gives it that room. The volcano's peak sits at the centre of the composition, so the eye settles there first, with the church and hill following below. The spare line work and cream field read as a single, calm image on the front of the shirt.
