Visual Elements & Composition

Warm cream paper fills most of the sheet, and graphite grey lines carry the whole image. The mountains run across the upper edge in a stepped ridgeline, and the eye drops through quick outlines of walls and roofs to the rounded, rocky hills in the foreground. Small marks in the middle distance suggest grazing animals, and handwritten pencil notes name the place and date the sheet.

Meaning & Symbolism

Church drew the buildings with economy, so the emphasis falls on how the rising ground, the long horizon and the scattered structures sit together on the slope. The sheet records a settlement within open, sparsely settled country, a working landscape of simple enclosures and grazing animals, seen by a traveller moving through the interior of Syria. Church made this study during his 1867 and 1868 journey through Syria, Lebanon and Palestine, and sheets like it prepared his finished compositions.
