Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Overlooking Burak, Syria, Part One - April 27, 1868 v4 - T-Shirt

This is a pencil field sheet by Frederic Edwin Church, recording the vegetation and terrain he saw around Burak, Syria, in 1868.

Visual Elements & Composition

The warm cream paper carries graphite-grey pencil work that dominates the sheet. The drawing is arranged as separate studies rather than one continuous view. A robed figure stands upright near the top centre, with a small animal lying nearby. Across the right half, a dense mass of low shrubs is built from small clustered strokes, rising behind a row of tall, slender bare trunks that lean and branch near the top. In the lower left, a plant with broad leaves and a small lobed herb sit on bare ground. At upper left, a rounded outcrop rests beneath a faint line of hills. Handwritten notes, including the words "grey" and "olive," name the species and describe the land.

Meaning & Symbolism

Church made sheets like this on his journey through Syria and Palestine in 1867 and 1868, and he drew from them for later paintings. Each element is treated on its own, and the labels show a concern with naming what grows in the countryside. The figure among the plants sets scale and places the study within land people walk through and use. The notes read as a traveller fixing the appearance of a specific place, which is what makes the sheet a working record rather than a finished landscape.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A tee shows its design across the chest, so the sheet's separate studies read as a set of small scenes instead of one horizon. The figure and outcrop sit where the eye lands first, with the shrub mass and trunks spreading below and to the side. The handwritten notes stay legible at the scale of a shirt, so the quiet, observational character of the original comes through when the wearer is in motion.
