Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Puracé from Popayán, Colombia and Landscape Study, Ecuador - August 10, 27 1853 v1 - T-Shirt

This design takes a graphite study by Frederic Edwin Church, made in 1853 on his South American expedition, and puts its record of the Puracé volcano above Popayán on the front of a tee.

Visual Elements & Composition

The source is a drawing in graphite on white wove paper, so the design runs in quiet greys against an open field of paper tone. Its composition is observational rather than dramatic: the volcano and the surrounding Andean ground are built from line and shading, with the eye moving across the terrain instead of settling on a single focal point. The dated title, with its two studies, Popayán and Ecuador, reads as a field notebook page, and the drawing keeps that documentary restraint.

Meaning & Symbolism

Church made these sketches while travelling through Colombia and Ecuador in the mid-nineteenth century, and they show the Andes as a place of scientific measurement and awe at once. He drew the landscape with the close attention of a naturalist, following the example of Alexander von Humboldt's writings on the region. Church later used studies like these as foundations for his large-scale paintings, which helped establish him as a leading figure of the Hudson River School. The original drawing is held in the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum collection.

Wearing the Volcano

A tee carries a drawing in a way a framed sheet never does: the image moves with the wearer and is seen up close in conversation and at a distance across a room. Church's fine linework rewards that closer look, with the volcano's outline and the textures of the land becoming clearer as you approach. Wearing this design puts a nineteenth-century field study of the Andes in everyday use.
