Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Puracé from Popayán, Colombia and Landscape Study, Ecuador - August 10, 27 1853 v3 - T-Shirt

This is a field study of the Andes, drawn in graphite by Frederic Edwin Church during his 1853 journey through Colombia and Ecuador.

Visual Elements & Composition

The work is built from graphite line on a pale, untinted ground. Church's strokes describe the bulk of the volcano at Puracé and the ridges around Popayán, with shading used to separate near slopes from distant ones. Nothing is decorative. The layout is open and survey-like, with the land itself filling the sheet and no figures or ornament competing with it.

Meaning & Symbolism

The studies record the geology and high-altitude terrain of the South American cordilleras, the kind of observation that fed the nineteenth-century Humboldtian idea of nature as an interconnected whole. Church worked as both artist and surveyor here, and these sheets show his belief that the artist-explorer was needed to understand the Americas. As a leading Hudson River School painter, he drew on field work like this for the large-scale landscapes that later defined American painting.

Built for the Way a Tee Is Seen

A study made to be held close and read slowly suits a shirt well. On a tee, the drawing sits across the chest and reads at conversation distance, and as the wearer moves, the shading shifts with the body. The volcano and ridgelines keep their proportions on the fabric, so the sketch reads as the record it was meant to be.
