This pencil study shows crumbling masonry at Burak, Syria, dated April 27, 1868, by the Hudson River School painter Frederic Edwin Church.

Visual Elements & Composition

Parchment yellow dominates the sheet, with pencil brown-grey lines drawing the stone and a small stamp blue-black accent. A broken wall with a small rectangular opening stands at far left, a longer run of collapsed masonry with a dark doorway sits across the centre, and a tall tower rises on the right with stacked courses of stone and a ragged top edge. Clusters of scattered rock and light hatching mark the dry ground. Handwritten notes in the upper right and beside the grass record colour and light, and the place name and date sit in the lower left.

Meaning & Symbolism

The drawing treats a ruined settlement as a study in decay and endurance. Its walls and doorways still hold their shape against the open ground, giving the ruin a sense of age with no human figure to anchor it. Church's annotations on the grass and shadows show him attending to the warm tones of the land, so the sheet records how sunlight changes old stone. It is one of the field records from his 1868 and 1869 journey through the Middle East, material that later fed canvases such as Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives (1870).

Carried Across the Chest

The sheet is wider than it is tall, so on a tee the central doorway and collapsed wall sit across the chest, with the tower climbing toward the shoulder. Like the mounted original, the composition reads as one continuous view, and the handwritten notes reward a closer look at the neckline and sleeves.
