Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Ruins, Burek, Syria - April 27, 1868 v4 - T-Shirt

This is a pencil drawing of a valley between sloping hills, dated April 27, 1868, and recorded at Burek, Syria.

Visual Elements & Composition

A long diagonal ridge runs down the left side to a flat valley floor, while layered, lightly hatched hills rise toward the centre. A slender upright structure stands on the high ground at upper right, and a smaller tower sits in the middle distance beside a cluster of low, horizontal buildings. A rounded outcrop rests on a rising slope at far right. Pale yellow-cream paper dominates the sheet, with soft pencil grey in the linework. Two short handwritten notes in the lower centre record colour, and the collection number is written at lower right.

Meaning & Symbolism

There is no figure or action here. The towers and clustered houses mark a settled place within a wide, quiet landscape, and the balance of hill, valley floor and vertical accent carries the scene. The colour notes show Frederic Edwin Church, the Hudson River School landscape painter, recording the tones of the land for later use. He travelled to the Middle East in 1868 and 1869, and drawings from that journey became source material for his oil paintings of Syria and the Holy Land, including Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives (1870). This sheet belongs to that field-study group.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A tee is seen at close range and moves with the wearer, so the valley opens across the chest and shifts with every step. The tower at upper right sits near the shoulder, and the horizon line crosses the body, giving the drawing a steady place on the garment. The quiet composition works well at this scale, where the viewer reads the hills and buildings up close.
