Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Sketches from Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada - July 12, 1859 v2 - T-Shirt

A pencil study sheet from 1859 that pairs a rowboat on still water with a towering iceberg, drawn by Frederic Edwin Church during his summer on the Newfoundland and Labrador coast.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is built from several small studies set across warm buff paper. In the lower left, two figures sit in a rowboat, its outline softened by horizontal reflections on the water. A large iceberg dominates the lower center and right, its angular, faceted planes shaded with dense hatching. A smaller, pointed iceberg sits low on the horizon above it. In the upper left, rock ledges are annotated in the artist's hand as moss on rocks, and a loose headland sketches across the upper center. The handwritten date, July 12, 1859, anchors the lower right corner.

Meaning & Symbolism

Icebergs were central to Church's vision of the North Atlantic, and here they are measured against small boats and rocky shorelines, which conveys their scale. The annotated moss and rock passages show the botanical and geological attention that underpinned his field practice. Church, an American painter associated with the Hudson River School, traveled widely for motifs, and sheets like this one were raw material: notes on shape, light, and scale to be carried into large finished landscapes.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A sketch sheet is a collection of separate studies, and a tee suits that layout well. The composition reads across the chest as a field of observations, with the rowboat and iceberg spread from lower left to right and the annotated rock passages sitting higher, the way a field notebook page is organized. Worn, the sheet becomes a record of a single summer's looking, carried on the body.
