Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Sketches from Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada - June–July 1859 v2 - T-Shirt

This is a loose graphite field sketch by Frederic Edwin Church, drawn during his June–July 1859 journey to Newfoundland and Labrador, recording the rugged shape of coastal ridges in quick pencil shorthand.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is built from graphite linework on buff paper, with no finished scene and much of the surface left blank. In the upper left, a faint angular ridge rises to a peak, marked by short hatched strokes and a diagonal line falling beside it. Toward the centre and right, clustered contours, curved arcs and a jagged zigzag run diagonally toward the lower right, and a curved line at the lower centre closes the grouping. The eye moves along that diagonal, from the rising peak down to the broken edge of the terrain.

Meaning & Symbolism

The drawing is a study of landform: rock faces, cliffs and shorelines encountered on Church's 1859 voyage. The zigzag contours and layered strokes describe structure, whether stratified rock or a wave-broken shore, reduced to notation. Church (1826–1900), a leading member of the Hudson River School and a pupil of Thomas Cole, used sheets like this as memory aids and source material for the large landscapes he later painted in oil. The Labrador journey anticipates his later Arctic subjects, including Icebergs (1861).

Built for the Hand and the Eye

On a tee, the sketch sits across the chest and reads as a sheet of field notes, with its open spaces and rising diagonal sitting naturally against the body. The loose, unfinished linework suits a garment worn through the day, where the drawing's quick, searching marks stay legible at a glance and gain character with each wear.
