Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Sunset at Sea, Ecuador, Part Three - May 1857 v1 - T-Shirt

A faint graphite study of a sunset over water, with soft clouds, a distant shore, and colour notes written around its edges.

Visual Elements & Composition

Cream paper fills nearly the whole frame, and the pencil lines are light and broken. Soft cloud forms rise across the upper left, a bank of smaller clouds sits at the left edge, and a low horizon of shore and distant land runs across the lower middle. Handwritten notes wrap around the drawing: metallic purplish brown luminous, golden brilliant, clear blue, smoky light shade, very dark, orange, red, grey and umber. The numeral 3 sits in the upper right corner.

Meaning & Symbolism

The sheet records the colour of a sunset rather than its outline. The notes move from the glowing gold and orange of the sky to the cooler blues and smoky greys of the lower light, showing Church sorting the scene by hue and value. Numbered as part three of a sequence, it is one of several notations made in the same evening, set down so the changing light could be reconstructed for later painting. Frederic Edwin Church (1826–1900), a Hudson River School landscape painter, travelled to Ecuador in 1857, and the sunsets and volcanic landscapes he drew there became central to his later work. Studies made from direct observation like this one formed the basis of the large paintings he is known for.

Made for a Tee Worn Close

A tee moves with the wearer, so this study reads at two distances: the full sky and horizon when you step back, and the handwritten colour notes when someone stands near. The loose, unfinished pencil lines suit a garment seen in motion, and the cream ground and warm notes sit easily against everyday wear.
