Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Sunset at Sea, Ecuador, Part Three - May 1857 v3 - T-Shirt

This is a pencil study of a cloud bank over the sea, with the artist's own colour notes written around the forms.

Visual Elements & Composition

Soft, broken graphite contours build a mass of cloud across the middle of the sheet, and a band of light horizontal strokes marks the water below. The palette sits on parchment tones, with pencil grey and mount grey carrying the drawing. The handwritten notes do much of the work: "metallic purplish brown luminous," "golden brilliant," "clear blue," "smoky orange" and "grey" are set beside the zones they describe. Small numerals appear at the edges and within the sketch, and the page is numbered at the upper right.

Meaning & Symbolism

Church made this field study during his 1857 voyage to Ecuador, where he recorded tropical light and mountain scenery that later fed his exhibition canvases, including Heart of the Andes (1859). He wrote colour down in words so that an oil painting could be built from the note rather than from memory alone. The page gives the emphasis to tone and atmosphere rather than outline. The contrast between cool blue and golden light, and between dense purplish cloud and smoky orange near the water, records the balance of warm and cool he was working to capture at a sky that was changing.

Wearing the Sunset

A tee carries this sketch across the chest, where the eye reads the cloud bank and the horizon band at a glance, the way Church meant a study to be read: as a quick record of a single changing hour. The design rests on the body as a single flat sheet of pencil and parchment, so the cool blue and golden passages stay in view as the wearer moves through the day.
