Frederic Edwin Church, American, - Sunset with Sunbeams, Jamaica - August 1865 v1 - T-Shirt

A graphite colour study of a tropical sky over a distant Jamaican ridgeline, written as much in words as in pencil.

Visual Elements & Composition

Warm grey paper dominates the sheet, with graphite hatching building the sky in horizontal bands that loosen toward the centre. A rounded mass of cloud or foliage rises above a broken line of hills that runs across the lower third, and a few small clouds drift at the middle. The most striking feature is the handwritten notes along the top and sides: "cool blue," "brilliant violet," "golden light green," "red," and "mountains bathed in golden purple," with a note at lower left marking the place as Jamaica.

Meaning & Symbolism

The sheet records colour rather than form. Church set down the hues of sky and mountains as words so the drawing could serve as a key to tones he planned to recover in paint. The subject is the late light of a tropical evening, when cloud and ridge turn violet and gold, and the numbered notes show the sequence of colours being measured in order. Frederic Edwin Church (1826–1900) was an American landscape painter of the Hudson River School and a pupil of Thomas Cole. He visited Jamaica in 1865 on a tour of the Caribbean, and this sheet belongs to the travel studies from which his luminous tropical landscapes were developed.

Carrying the Evening Sky

On a tee, the sketch reads as a quiet, close-up study rather than a wall-sized view. The hatched bands of sky sit across the chest, and the ridgeline and notes of violet and gold give the wearer a small, legible record of one tropical sunset. The design's appeal lies in its hush and its colour names, which unfold as you look at it up close.
