Visual Elements & Composition

Frederic Edwin Church (1826–1900) was an American landscape painter of the Hudson River School and a pupil of Thomas Cole. This study belongs to the tropical sketches he made on his Caribbean travels, and it is catalogued under the title Sunset with Sunbeams, Jamaica, August 1865. Studies like this recorded a passing effect of weather so the atmosphere of a finished painting could be recalled accurately after the moment had gone. The quick notation of cloud and light was the working material from which his larger, luminous landscapes were built.
