Along the lower centre and right, a broad bank of close diagonal hatching describes a dark hillside or shore, its edges falling away into lighter ground on the left. Meaning & Symbolism

The sketch records the moment when the light is still warm in the sky while the land has already gone dark. Church (1826–1900) was a leading painter of the Hudson River School, and he made studies like this in the open air, naming each tint as it faded so the effect could be carried into oil paint later.
