Visual Elements & Composition

Below them a low ridge crosses the lower third, its hatched edges darkening toward the bottom. A small, dark tree rises at the centre of the ridge, the only firm shape in an otherwise restless field. Church (1826–1900) was a central figure of the Hudson River School, known for large panoramic landscapes and for sketches made on long journeys across North and South America and the Near East.
