Frederic Edwin Church (1826–1900) was a leading painter of the Hudson River School, and his landscapes of New York and the Hudson Valley rested on careful outdoor study. This sheet records the closing phase of twilight, when the sky moves from gold toward indigo and the land is reduced to shapes. The annotations show Church treating the tree less as a botanical study than as a point of dark contrast within the evening scene. Sketches like this, paired with written colour notes, were the groundwork for the large studio paintings he later developed.
