George Elbert Burr, born Monroe Falls, - Elms-Eton, England - 1899 - T-Shirt

This pencil study shows a dense stand of broadleaf trees on level ground, drawn with patient attention to mass, outline and the play of light across foliage.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is built almost entirely in graphite grey on cream paper. A clump of trees fills the centre of the sheet, its canopy formed from diagonal hatching that gives the leaves volume, with darker masses sitting among the lighter tones. A smaller, separate tree rises at the right, its short trunk opening into a rounded head. A few light horizontal strokes indicate the ground and fade toward the edges, leaving most of the paper blank so the trees stand alone. The inscription at the upper left reads Elms-Eton, England, and the date June 3-99 is written in the sheet.

Meaning & Symbolism

The subject is a stand of trees observed directly rather than a narrative scene. Landscape studies of this kind were common in nineteenth-century English drawing, valued for their form and for the cultivated, settled countryside they belonged to. The meaning sits in the looking itself: the record of close, unhurried observation. George Elbert Burr, born in Monroe Falls, made the original study in June 1899 at Eton, one of a set of quick pencil sketches made while travelling. It shows an artist working from the motif in front of him to build a tonal record of one particular place.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A pencil study is made to be looked at closely, and this design rewards that. The drawing wraps across the front of the shirt, so the canopy and the single tree at right stay visible as you move. Its quiet tonal range suits a shirt worn through the everyday, where the eye returns to the same patient outline of leaves and light.
